Spatial cognition is an appropriate comparative model for studying cognition, because orientation is necessary both for mammals and birds and it is based on homologous neuronal structure - hippocampal formation. Up to now spatial cognition was mainly studied by tasks based on direct information about environment where animal was moving. Contrary, we use behavioral test to reveal if birds are able to make spatial decisions in real space based on abstract visual information. We carried out analogous experiments with rats (Rattus norvegicus) and now similar experiments are proceeding with rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). This test allows us to study cognitive functions, spatial representation, categorization, pattern discrimination etc. We also could compare cognitive functions between different species according on their adaptive ecological specialization."@en .
