"Redox-active molecules play important roles in biochemical processes and are highlighted by a particularly bivalent behavior: Thus, they may act as antitumor agents on one hand or may bear carcinogenic character on the other. Further, transition-metal complexes of redox-active molecules have promising applications in technology (e.g. molecular switches). Knowledge of the intrinsic properties of redox-active molecules is of prime importance in order to achieve a more fundamental understanding of their functions. The present project concentrates on structural aspects and the associated reactivities of redox-active molecules as well as their metal complexes, where particular attention is paid to the ability to accept or release electrons. The intrinsic thermokinetic properties of redox-active molecules \u2013 either as free entities or as their metal complexes \u2013 will be investigated by gas-phase experiments using modern mass spectrometric techniques and contemporary quantum chemical methods."@en .
