"Species specific features of dentition in recent mammals arose during evolution. Prenatal development of dentition will be analysed in embryos and fetuses of representative species of mammals (rodents, ruminants), which exhibit apparent diversity in crown shapes and dental patterns including strong reduction in tooth number (oligodontia). We intend to test the following hypothesis: Apoptosis is a general morphogenetic mechanism involved in determination of tooth pattern and occurring also during specific stages of cusps formation. The temporo-spatial changes in the arrangement and shape of developing tooth primordia as well as the origin of tooth-less areas will be analysed and correlated with apoptosis distribution using histological sections and computer aided three-dimensional reconstructions. Expression of molecules involved in regulation of progressive development of tooth primordia ot their regression by apoptosis will be determined by in situ hybridization."@en . "22"^^ . "1654"^^ .
