This conclusion was drawn from observations of uncoated leaf and cuticle samples in the environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) equipped with cathodoluminescence detector. The cathodoluminescence signal (CL) was species specific and apparently varied with ait humidity and/or UV radiation. Understanding of the nature of this phenomenon could help to find the long-term sought mechanism of humidity response of stomata and of adaptation and acclimation to dry environment. Here, we propose to investigate this feature of guard cells using ESEM awuipped with ionisation detector and doing concurrent chemical analyses of leaf and guard cell waxes in plants grown under variable levels of atmospheric drought, antitranspirants and UV radiation.
