"Recent advances in the study of mammalian genetics provided a framework for a more comprehensive characterisation of species-specific differences. Furthermore, genome (re-)sequencing projects are now directed toward a detailed, comparative cataloguing of genetic differences that provide the basis for determining evolutionary time of divergence as well as particular mechanisms that enable a propagation of genetic information on the phenotypic level. This projects aims at detailed studying behaviourally important genes in several mammalian taxa in order to reconstruct evolutionary forces that shaped the evolution of particular types of behaviour. Methodology in the proposed project will involve: (1) high resolution gene-copy counting (i.e. using RealTime-qPCR probes); (2) gene expression analysis; (3) mathematical modelling for efficient testing the relations between (potentially viral) causes of gene multiplication, responsive expression differences, and emerged behavioural phenotype."@en .
