"Diversity of secondary metabolism genes in actinomycetes will be assessed together with 16S rDNA genes diversity in environmental DNA of soils from extremely diverse habitats. Soil samples will be also subjected to the isolation of bacteria. Directed selection of isolates will establish a diversified collection of soil actinomycetes. In the obtained collection of species and strains, diversity of selected secondary metabolic genes coding for common enzymes, e.g. polyketide synthases, or rare ones, e.g. halogenases, will be determined. Phylogenetic trees constructed from sequences of the enzymes typical of secondary metabolism will be compared to those based on the 16S rDNA genes. Presence of the rare genes in the isolates will be correlated to the level of homology in the more common genes. Variability of the rare genes will be studied in relationship to the diversity of sampled habitats but also in relationship to preservation of their original function in the biosynthetic cluster."@en . .
