Two main factors affect the population exposure by heavy metals: ingestion of plants produced in the contaminated area, and ingestion or the inhalation of contaminated soil. According to the literature, the potential bioacessibility and bioavailability of soil elements is described in number of in vitro and in vivo experiments. However, the inhabitants living in contaminated area are long-term exposed to the contaminated soil and the impact of risk elements should be evaluated from biochemical, physiological and hematological point of view. The lack of relevant informations require the assessment of the potential impact of soil ingestion on parameters of oxidative stress in rats.
