"Calreticulin has been reported as multifunctional calcium-binding protein acting as molecular chaperone for class I MHC antigen. More recently, it has been shown that calreticulin interacts with synthetic antimicrobial peptides derived from invertebrate defensins. In our previous projects, we have characterized and cloned antimicrobial lectin CCF present in the coelomic fluid and on the surface of immunocytes of Eisenia foetida annelid worms. This lectin acts as pattern recognition molecule binding microbial polysaccharides. Moreover, it has been proved that CCF exerts TNF-like properties including similar activation signal on mammalian immunocytes and interaction with Na+/K+ ion channels. Scientific aim of the proposed project is to follow, in view of defense function of CCF and its known effects on mammalian immunocytes, the possible interaction of CCF with calreticulin."@en .
