The cyanobacterium Synechocystis PCC 6803, an excellent model organism for study of thylakoid protein degradation, contains four genes encoding FtsH homologues. The protease encoded by the slr0228 gene was shown to participate in the selective replacement of the Photosystem II (PSII) subunit D1 although the mechanism of recognizing this damaged subunit is unclear. FtsH (slr0228) also controls level of several other PSII subunits but its other substrates are unknown. The function of remaining three FtsH homologues is unknown either. The aim of the project is to study the role of Photosystem II donor side in the recognition of the damaged D1 subunit by FtsH (slr0228), to identify its other substrates and to establish function of other, so far uncharacterized FtsH proteases encoded by the slr1604 and slr1390 genes."@en .
