"The aim of the project is operation and modernization of a system for the long-term monitoring of soil temperatures to the depth of 0.5 m under different surface conditions, namely under grass, barren soil, sand and asphalt, which is operated in the Geophysical Institute Prague since 2002. Beside soil temperatures (2,5,10,20 and 50 cm) also air temperatures (5 and 200 cm) are measured. The system upgrade will include monitoring of soil moisture, air humidity, height of snow cover, precipitation, irradiance and speed and direction of wind. It will allow to study interannual variability of mean annual soil temperatures and of differences soil \u2013 air, their dependence on the surface type, and their correlation with the measured meteorological variables. This knowledge is critical for climatic interpretation of the ground surface temperature histories reconstructed from borehole temperature \u2013 depth profiles.
