"Performed experiments proved that nonlinear processes, including self-focusing of the laser beam, accompanying intense-laser interactions with pre-formed plasma, are significant additional, or even leading, mechanisms at a production of ions with extremely high characteristics. The proposed program is directed to the experimental investigation of the ion characteristics obtained with 1kJ/400ps iodine laser system PALS in Prague (maybe also with its upgraded fs version), but also with 1J/1ps Nd:glass laser in Warsaw, which differ significantly in the pulse length. Duration of laser interactions with self-created plasma is also different. Analysis of results would serve to distinguish mechanisms responsible for generation and acceleration of highly charged ions (above 50+) with extremely high kinetic energy (~100 MeV), not yet unambiguously determined.
