dcterms:description
Mediation as such represents an opportunity for the expansion of social work practice into the area of conflict resolution, all the way from international conflicts to civil disputes. Mediation together with probation are mainly well established in countries with an uninterrupted continuity of social work, where they function in a number of areas. They cover custody and divorce litigations, criminal litigations, negotiations about the custody of children, elderly care, educational social work, discriminatory behaviour complaints, healthcare, labour disputes, and public policy debates. In recent years, mediation and probation have been incorporated into the legal systems of many countries in order to encourage disputing parties to develop their own solutions which satisfies both, and motivates them to comply with an agreed solution, so that neither of the concerned parties leaves with grievances or feelings of having lost. One can only hope that the skill in mediation techniques, or even basic training in mediation, becomes a component of lifelong learning programs and accreditation of higher education programs of social work, and that the programs will automatically be complemented by discussion seminars on professional ethics and ethical dilemmas.
