dcterms:description
Fossil fuel reserves are becoming far more scarce and as a result the price of petroleum fuels is increasing. Moreover, generation of pollutants and ecological risks caused by diesel engine emissions has prompted the seek of cheaper and ecological fuel alternatives. Biodiesel is a renewable and biodegradable form of energy that has moved upward towards fossil fuel replacement. However, during biodiesel production, 1 mol of glycerol is released as a byproduct from the transesterification reaction of 1 mol of triacylglycerol with 3 mol of methanol. The challenge of glycerol oxidation lays precisely on the generation of these derivatives that are produced during the reaction, and on the selection of an environmentaly friendly oxidation method that will not introduce new hazardous chemicals to the process. In this view, the electrochemical oxidation method emerges as an ecofriendly process in which electrodes provides the electron source for reduction and oxidation to take place in the cathode and anode respectively. In the present research, Multiple Pulse Amperometry was used to perform the glycerol oxidation under a three electrode system with two platinum electrodes as working and counter electrodes and a Ag/AgCl/3.0 mol/kg KCl as reference electrode. Alkali solutions of glycerol in MnO2 at different ratios and concentrations were used at reaction temperatures of 25, 45, 65 and 75 °C. The influence of stirring speed (100 and 200 rpm) and stirring time (1 – 20 h) on glycerol oxidation to selective products was also analyzed Fossil fuel reserves are becoming far more scarce and as a result the price of petroleum fuels is increasing.
