The presented work is focused on the preparation and characterisation of plasma polymerised SiOx barrier layers on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) foils. Vacuum based plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was employed for the generation of the layers from hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) under different operating conditions. The chemical composition, physical properties and the morphology of the films were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and free surface energy evaluation. The gas permeability of the foils was determined by a manometric gas permeability method.
