Rod-like titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles prepared via microwave-assisted molten-salt synthesis were used as a dispersed phase in novel electrorheological (ER) fluids in this study. The initially nanometer-sized TiO2 particles of anatase crystalline phase transformed their morphology to the rod-like micrometer-sized particles of rutile phase during the synthesis as was proved via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), respectively. The ER experiments performed under steady shear flow showed high ER performance of rod-like particles based silicone oil suspensions.
