The aim of this study was to determine the content of chosen heavy metals (mercury, lead and cadmium) and some nutritional values (β-carotene and vitamin C) in raw broccoli samples obtained from trade network. For the assessment of heavy metals the samples were mineralized with the mixture of sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide and the analysis was performed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (analyzers AMA 254 and AVANTA GBC 933A, GBC, Australia). β-carotene and vitamin C was extracted by hexane and acetone and mixture of methanol, phosphoric acid and redistilled water, respectively. Both β-carotene and vitamin C were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (Coulochem III, ESA, USA). The broccoli samples contained 0.094 ? 0.1152 ?g.100g-1 of mercury and 0.0004 ? 0.03981 ?g.100g-1 of lead. No cadmium was detected.
