People have been wearing shoes for thousands years. Unfortunately, we will never find out who and where made the first shoe. After all, it is not difficult to guess why shoes appeared and why they are worn. Shoes have been for many years our basic need and protection. Special shoes provided easier walking in various surroundings and many activities such as working, sport or dancing. But there are many other reasons for wearing shoes. Shoes are symbols of social status and an objects of admiration. And a shoe belongs to a foot.This opening paper is engaged in the human foot and its evolution and mostly in the fact how shoemakers managed to produce good fitting and comfort shoes. This paper deals with the phylogenetic and ontogenetic foot evolution, foot measurements for the individual and industrial shoe production, co-operation of anthropologists and doctors with shoe producers and situation in recent foot researches, mainly research and engineering activities of the Faculty of Technology at the Tom People have been wearing shoes for thousands years.
