The Quaternary environmental studies carried out in the pristine mountain and steppe areas of southern Siberia show a gradual climatic evolution over the last ca. 130 000 years. The presence of bacterial strains dominated by the genus Pseudomonas utilising the phenol-bound xenobiotics indicate their natural distribution in the local industrially unpolluted environments. This indicates that phenol does not represent any major contamination problem for most of the Siberian soils and can be degraded by thelocal natural microflora.
