An experiment on the search for double electron capture in the decay of 106Cd is under way at the Modane underground laboratory (4800m w.e.). Thin (cca 50 μm) samples of enriched 106Cd and natural Cd are being investigated at the TGV-2 low-background many-detector spectrometer. Preliminary processing of the data gathered for 3400 h of measurements with 10g of enriched 106Cd (enrichment 75%) allowed new limitations (at the 90% confidence level) to be imposed on different 106Cd decay branches to the ground (0+) and the first excited (2+, 512keV) states of the daughter nucleus. They are T1/2(2vβ+EC) >= 4.1x1019 yr and T1/2(2vEC/EC) >= 5.6x1019 yr (for transitions 0+ -> 0+, g.s.) and T1/2(2vβ +EC) >= 5.8x1019 yr and T1/2(2vEC/EC) >= 2.1x1019 yr (for transition to the 2+ excited state).
