The existence of intensive absorption bands of different gases in the Earth’s atmosphere together with mid-infrared high transparency bands with minimal transmission losses in the spectral region around 4 μm pursues the development of laser sources to be used in the applications as radars, lidars, or communication. Other interest for those wavelengths can be in medical application. One of promising materials enabling to generate radiation in this region is trivalent dysprosium active ion in a lead thiogallate PbGa2S4 (PGS) matrix. In our work the CW room temperature operation of Dy:PGS laser pumped by two wavelengths (1.32μm generated by diode pumped Nd:YAG laser or 1.70μm generated directly by laser diode) was investigated. This allowed to realize a compact mid IR laser source with significantly improved efficiency.
