The result of our work is the development of optimization code ATHENA, which is used for optimizing of fuel loading pattern of nuclear reactor. With this code we made an analysis of long cycles in VVER 440 reactor with Gd-2M fuel, which is currently operated and with innovative Gd-2M+ and Gd-2X fuel, which are developed by TVEL as advanced fuel for VVER 440 reactors. Optimization allowed to us not only find long cycles, but also to evaluate the effectiveness of new types of fuel and estimate options of long cycles and number of necessary fresh fuel assemblies.
