Vibrations of a machine or a piece of equipment can be reduced in the design phase by using a sufficiently stiff construction together with a reasonable weight, high natural frequency and good absorption capabilities. This paper therefore looks at different methods of damping vibra-tions of machines and technical equipment resulting from bad construction or excessive wear and tear (e.g. bearing or gear wheel play, etc.), either by changing the vibration damping method used (e.g. semi-active damping) or involving absorbers.
