The microprocessor used in the measuring electronic includes firmware controlling the measurement process. The type of the microprocessor is ATmega1284P, it runs at 20 MHz, the firmware is written in assembler and it is debugged using AVRstudio simulator. Firmware takes care of the communication with supervisory PC via the RS232 interface using 6 byte long messages. There are six types of messages: inquiry of status of electronic, reset, write of the DAC values and start of the measurement. The electronic replies to the first three messages informing about its status (reset has been carried out, program is running, data write successful). Last message starts the measurement cycle and it contains the parameters such as frequency of generated signal, number of pulses, polarity of received signal and the gain of input amplifier. After the measurement cycle is finished the measured data or the error message are sent to the computer. Firmware also controls the LED indicators informing the users about the measurement status.
