The Vanadis 6 cold - work steel was heat treated (austenitized, quenched and double tempered) to a resulting hardness of 60 HRC and subsequently surface processed via the plasma nitriding and/or CrN - PVD coating. The plasma nitriding increases the surface hardness and microhardness du to the saturation of the surface with nitrogen that is connected with the formation of nitrides. Simultaneously, the compressive stresses are formed in the near surface region. As a result of the plasma nitriding, the material becomes more brittle but more wear resistant. Subsequent PVD - layering with the chromium nitride lowered the friction coefficient and tended to a considerable improvement of wear resistance. Also the local chemistry of the coating has to be taken into account for the evaluation of the coating - the Cr - surplus makes it possible to reduce the stress induced by the loading, that leads to the increase of critical load in order of magnitude. Ocel pro práci za studena Vanadis 6 byla tepelně zpracována na tvrdost 60 HRC a následně povrchově zpracována pomocí plasmové nitridace a/anebo povlakování CrN. Plasmová nitridace zvyšuje povrchovou tvrdost a mikrotvrdost v důsledku sycení dusíkem, což je spojeno s tvorbou nitridů. Současně se vytváří tlakové pnutí v povrchové oblasti. Výsledkem plasmové nitridace je však zkřehnutí materiálu, na druhé straně však zvýšení jeho otěruvzdornosti. Následné PVD-povlakování vrstvou CrN snižuje koeficient tření a způsobuje výrazné zlepšení otěruvzdornosti.
