Fly ash is a fine grained material, which is produced by the coal combustion in the thermal power plant. The world production of fly ash increases every year. There are great demands on environmental protection nowadays. It leads to the attempts of reusing of the fly ash in many branch of the civil engineering. From the view of geotechnics, the most interesting utilization is in the construction of the earth structures. The efforts of the maximum utilization of the fly ash lead to the idea of the fly ash improvement. This paper is focused on the method of the improvement of fly ash engineering properties –stabilization and fibre reinforcement. This “micro-reinforcement” method is a relatively new and it is not so widely used as for example the stabilization. In this method small amount of short plastic fibres is randomly mixed with the fly ash. Inclusion of fibres causes changes in the behaviour. Fly ash becomes ductile and it also positively influences shear strength. This paper is focused on the experimental investigation of the improved fly ash. The unconfined compression tests and compaction tests were carried out to study the influence of the individual method and also the combined effect of cement and fibres.
