This paper describes a possible tool for estimation of potential risk arising from placing concrete in winter. It is well known that the hydration reaction depends of temperature and that the driving force for hydration is the diffusion of free water. Low ambient temperatures close to the freezing point or temperatures below zero during hydration have the potential to affect adversely the ultimate performance of concrete structures. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the risk and provide adequate countermeasures such as thermal insulation or direct heat sources to the hydrating concrete, of course, with the strong emphasis on their cost. The proposed model of hydration under very low temperatures is based on fuzzy logic and uses the commonly available data from concrete producers.
