This paper is focused on the role of the road traffic intensity in the development of the city of Prague. The main attention is paid to the relationship between the urban areas development in Prague and the road traffic intensity. In the modern world as a result of a number natural factors, the urbanization and intensive development of city territories is occurs. In particularly, on previously non-urbanized areas, like as green space areas, forest, agricultural land etc. This causes an increase of road traffic intensity with negative influence on the environment in the outer zone of the cities. The overlay analysis was carried out by using software ArcGIS 10.0 to understand at the expense of which land there was development of road traffic. The vector land use plans of Prague at the different periods were used for the analysis. The analysis has allowed to reveal the structure of urban spatial development and its relationship with increase of the road traffic intensity. To evaluate of influence of road traffic development on the environment the analysis of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere was performed. This paper introduces the way of searching for the relationship between the development of certain areas of Prague and the development of the road traffic intensity by using GIS technologies.
