dcterms:description
An accurate prediction of the behavior of historical masonry structures under complex macroscopic loading program with the main objective of offering the most suitable way of reconstruction requires the knowledge of homogenized effective properties including effective fracture energy of masonry structures of often if irregular distribution of stone blocks. While a carefully prepared experimental program may provide reliable estimates of the required quantities for masonry systems with regular arrangement of blocks, the quarry masonry are best analyzed with the help of classical micromechanics tools. In particular, the concept of statistically equivalent periodic unit cell is employed in the present approach with a special emphasis on the treatment of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), which appears crucial for the derivation of accurate results.
