The research results of the problems of reliability of steel structures exposed to earthquakes have proved that many of so far recommended rules and common principles for the arrangement and design of load-bearing steel structures are no longer satisfactory. Consequently, it is advisable to reassess the basis of reliability assessment with reference to energy dissipation during earthquakes, the possibility of application of probabilistic approach and the expression of reliability by a comparison of the computed probability of failure with the target probability required.
