The paper presents a critical review of minor destructive or less invasive methods and approaches to investigations and diagnostics of historic timber structures. It presents selected methods developed for diagnosing their health. A comparison of different techniques suitable for testing wood characteristics comprises: resistance drilling, surface static and dynamic indentation techniques and videoscopy. Specific problems of interpretation of data measured on decayed timber are discussed and empirical formulas suitable for practical assessment are suggested.
