The spectroscopic properties of undoped RE2O3 (RE = Lu, Sc, Y) are reported and single crystals and optical ceramics are mutually compared. The analysis of our experimental and literature data gives further support about the different origin of the intrinsic emission bands in sesquioxides studied. An extended time-resolved study was done for Sc2O3 sample, where we propose the coexistence of the direct recombination and tunneling processes at the lowest temperatures. Considering the spectral peculiarities of single crystals and ceramic, the conclusion was made that the occurrence of particular defects plays a role in exciton trapping and depends on morphology of the sample, especially on the grain boundaries in optical ceramics.
