An approach to short excitation with efficient suppression of water and lipid signals, suitable for fast MR spectroscopic imaging, is described. The insensitivity to variations of B1 and T1 is achieved by combining outer volume saturation with excitation by an optimized composite RF pulse characterized by nonexcitation windows at the resonance frequencies of water and lipids.
