A comparison between the creep characteristics of binary Mg-Sc alloys and a complex MgGdScMn alloy shows that the creep resistance of the MgGdScMn alloy is considerably improved compared to the Mg-Sc alloys. It is suggested that the creep strengthening in the MgGdScMn alloys arise mainly from the precipitation sequence during creep. The results indicate that a plate-like precipitate plays a decisive role in the creep strengthening of a complex MgGdScMn alloy.
