Detailed observations of the surface relief formation adjacent to persistent slip bands in cyclically strained polycrystalline 316L stainless steel were performed using high resolution technique - atomic force microscopy AFM). Experimental data were obtained on the changes of the surface topography of persistent slip markings and on the kinetics of extrusion growth during the fatigue life of smooth specimens. Experimental observations are discussed in terms of the recent vacancy models of surface relief evolution.
