Based on several polymorphic sites in the internal transcribed spacers (ITSs), we identified six major rRNA gene families (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, omega) in pentaploid R.canina, R. rubiginosa, R. dumalis, R. sherardii, R. caesia and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 28) R.mollis. Results showed that β rDNA family likely occurs preferentially on bivalent forming chromosomes that are transmitted from the pollen and dominantly expresses in all dogrose species, whereas, families carried on univalent chromosomes are, in some cases, silenced.
