This review summarizes the present state of knowledge on evolutionary aspects in Hieracium subgen. Pilosella. It summarizes patterns of variability in sexuals and facultative apomicts at clone, population and species level and in comparison with crossing experiments. It addresses the role of selection on particular cytotypes, emphasizes the importance of residual sexuality of apomicts, describes colonization behavior and invasive potential of the group, presents its phylogeny in relation to ancient hybridization and introgression, outlines a biogeographic scenario and discusses the origin of polyploidy and apomixis. An updated map of the subgenus’ native distribution, a comprehensive table of its adventive occurrences and a checklist for the study of natural populations of apomictic complexes are provided. Promising avenues for future research are outlined. A general introduction and extensive reference list add to its value as a lead-in to this taxonomically complex group.
