Turbulent phenomena in plasma jets lead to the formation of vortex structures which affect plasma temperature and density. The downstream motion of refions characterised by the changing optical emissivity may be then revealed by analysis of sequences of CCD camera images. In our experiments, a d.c. fed plasma torch operating with argon at 150 a and the arc length ~40 mm was used to generate a plasma jet at various input gas flow rates in the range 10-60 slm.
