Data on biomass and net primary production by aquatic macrophytes collected in Central and Eastern Europe since 1960s, have been evaluated from the viewpoint of carbon content in and accumulation by the macrophytes. Macrophyte habitats are classified into oligo- meso- and eutrophic ones and plant life forms are as emergent, floating-leaved (either free-floating or rooted) and submerged (both rooted and not rooted). The medium- to long-term carbon accumulation in the macrophytes is, within each life form, mostly inversely proportional to the trophic status. Importance of macrophyte net primary production and carbon accumulation for aquatic and wetland ecosystems is discussed. Apart from Charophytes, carbonate encrustations play a minor role in carbon accumulation by macrophytes. Stands of Phragmites autralis in habitats of different trophy exemplify rich carbon accumulation.
