A proposed new motorway crosses several former open mines, which were backfilled with excavated clay and claystone overbunden. A comprehensive field investigation and laboratory testing program to evaluate the fill compressibility was carried out. Since the results of the common field and laboratory tests were not believed to be satisfactorily representative, the site investigation was complemented by in-situ loading tests by two trial embankments . The first embankment was 6 m and the second one 8 m high. The subsoil of both trial embankments was instrumented. Flexible plastic tubes were installed on the ground surface to facilitate hydrostatic leveling. Further, depth reference points, pore-water pressure gauges and inclinometres were installed. The estimation of fill compressibility based on the settlement of depth reference point is presented. Navržená dálnice křižuje na několika místech bývalé povrchové doly, které byly zasypány vykopanými jíly a zpevněny jílovci. Byl proveden komplexní výzkum a laboratorní testy stlačitelnosti. Jelikož laboratorní výsledky nebyly dostatečně reprezentativní, byl průzkum staveniště doplněn zatěžovacím testem na dvou zkušebních násypech. První násyp byl 6 m a druhý 8 m vysoký. Podloží obou násypů bylo instrumentováno. Na povrchu byly instalovány flexibilní plastické trubky pro usnadnění hydraulického vyrovnání. Kromě toho byly nainstalovány hloubkové referenční body a inklinometry. Byl prezentován odhad stlačitelnosti založený na usazení hloubkových referenčních bodů.
