dcterms:description
Rabbit meat is commonly used for human consumption. The aim of this study was to evaluate seroprevalence of T. gondii and E. cuniculi antibodies in domestic rabbits kept in different housing conditions as an important information for veterinary practice and human health. Blood samples from commercially breed rabbits were collected in a slaughterhouse; other samples were obtained individually from small family farms after slitting a throat of a rabbit or from marginal ear vein of animals. Totally was collected 1883 samples of rabbit sera, 902 samples from 6 commercial rabbit farms and 981 sera from 29 small family farms to determine presence of IgG and IgM antibodies of T. gondii and E. cuniculi using in-house ELISA tests. T. gondii antibodies were detected in 5,5 % of rabbits at 2 commercial farms and at 24 family farms. There was a significant difference between prevalence of T. gondii in small family farms (10,1 %) and in commercial farms (0,4 %). All tested farms were E. cuniculi positive. E. cuniculi antibodies were presented in 36,2 % of all animals. 50,66 % animals from small family farms and 20,51 % animals from commercial farms were infected with E. cuniculi. We are reporting a significant decrease of T. gondii prevalence in rabbits from family farms in comparsion to previously reported results (53 %). This reveals a big decrease of toxoplasmosis in rabbits apparently caused by a change in breeding of animals, using anticcocidials and complete feed mixtures. E. cuniculi prevalence 50,66 % in rabbits from small flocks and 20,51 % in rabbits from big flocks is comparable to other studies. Rabbit meat is commonly used for human consumption.
