The aim of this experimental cross-over blinded study was to determine effect of aerosolised salbutamol administration on oxygen delivery during general anaesthesia. Previous studies using beta2 adrenergic agonists reported controversial results (Dodam et al., 1993; Robertson and Bailey, 2002). Six healthy Thoroughbreds (body weight range 470 - 587 kg) underwent two general anaesthesias in dorsal recumbency with and without aerosolised salbutamol administration in randomized order with one month washout period. The anaesthetic protocol included administration of 1.1 mg/kg of xylazine followed by 2.2 mg/kg of ketamine and 0.02 mg/kg of diazepam. Isoflurane was used for maintenance (FiO2 0.5-0.6). All horses were mechanically ventilated. FiO2, PaO2, cardiac output (lithium dilution) and arterial oxygen content (blood gas analysis and co-oximetry) were included. Šest zdravých anglických plnokrevníků podstoupilo dvě celkové anestézie v dorzální polohe, s a bez inhalační aplikace salbutamolu v náhodném pořadí, s mesíční klidovou periodou mezi anestéziemi. Anestéziologický protokol zahrnoval podání 1.1 mg/kg xylazinu, 2.2 mg/kg ketaminu a 0.02 mg/kg diazepamu. Anestézie byla vedená izofluranem (FiO2 0.5-0.6). Všechny koně byli mechanicky ventilovaní. Inhalačně podaný salbutamol u zdravých koní během celkové anestézie může mít pozitivní vliv na arteriální oxygenáci a dodávku kyslíku, ale efekt je variabilní mezi jedinci.
