dcterms:description
Study is concerned on comparing two different forest stands, the former dominated by European Beech (Fagus silvatica L.) the later by Norway Spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) basing on characteristics of their humic substances. It was observed that total carbon content was generally higher in soil horizons under spruce stand than under beech one. This may be caused by decreased mineralization and humification rates. This is consistent with much higher accumulation of organic matter in forest floor under spruce as compared with beech and higher acidity of the soil profile under spruce stand. Humic to fulvic acids ratio, degrees of humification, colour quotient Q4/6 and DOC were used as indicators to evaluate humus conditions. According to these observations we concluded, that when planting spruce stands in lower altitudes, higher portion of broadleaved tree species should be used in order to avoid soil acidification, nutrients cycling disturbance and/or humus degradation.
