dcterms:description
Game may not only have an impact on species composition and population density in different forest levels, but also on forest dynamics. The recurrent browsing gradually leads to the exclusion of older woody plants after their adaptation potential is spent, or their growth reserves for the browsing damage compensation are replenished. The natural regeneration may thus be completely destroyed or kept in their initiation stage for a long time, i.e. they consist of particularly young trees complemented with older woody plants repeatedly damaged by browsing. These possible or expected consequences of browsing are known in a general or hypothetical level, and are generally described. More detailed knowledge on mechanisms and key factors of these changes are still far from extensive. Between 2005 and 2011, the authors of this monograph performed research of the natural regeneration conditions and the impact of browsing on natural regeneration in 33 areas. The research was performed thanks to the support of the research programme of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports %22Forest and Wood: the support of functionally integrated forest management and use of wood as renewable raw material%22 (MSM6215648902), within which the reserves were predominantly monitored. Bachelor's and Master's theses of students also constituted a great help. This monograph summarizes the results of the research. We attempted to map the conditions of specific areas and identify substantial risks of further development of woody vegetation. We attempted to find significant relations between the monitored parameters, find a general connection of the relation between herbivore or browser or grazer and a woody plant, or woody natural regeneration.
