Variable rate fertilizer application adjusts plant nutrition according to the local differences in soil nutrient content and plant requirements. Traditional practices for estimation of base fertilization using soil sampling are non-effective in precision agriculture because of inadequate spatial coverage and high cost. This paper describes the concept of variable fertilization based on soil analysis according to Mehlich 3 procedures. The first step includes obtaining information about soil agrochemical properties. Optimization of the soil sampling based on sensor mapping, such as remote sensing and on-the-go measurement of soil electrical conductivity, proved reduction of the total number of samples up to 60 % by keeping the same accuracy of soil maps as a 1-ha regular grid. The second step, so called %22balance coefficient%22 was implemented to smooth the classification of the soil nutrient maps instead of origin 5-classes categorization recommended by the Mehlich 3. In the last step, historical yield maps were used to delineate zones of higher or lower yield productivity for more precise estimation of nutrient utilization by plants. Described workflow shows a modification of traditional approaches into site specific crop management aimed at preservation of soil fertility by more efficient use of fertilizers. However, quantification of the benefits needs further verification on different soil and farm conditions.
