Elevated concentrations of arsenic in southern area of the Lake Poopó in the Bolivian Altiplano have been investigated. There also are high salinity and boron in water. High pH values and competition of arsenic with bicarbonate and silica for adsorption sites probably play an important role in mobilization of arsenic. Further monitoring is necessary for evaluation of arsenic mobilization and its environmental impact.
