dcterms:description
The ability of different molecular weight fractions of interstitial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from a small stream to stimulate bacterial growth was tested. Bacterial growth was greatest in the low-molar mass (LMM) fraction (1000 Da) and least in the high-molar mass (HMM) fraction (10 000 Da). The LMM fraction consistently had the higher C/Norganic then other fractions. The fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed that bacterial populations in interstitial water were dominated by -Proteobacteria. The -Proteobacteria together with Cytophaga-Flavobacteria cluster dominated in LMM DOC (66.3 %) while the proportions of bacterial groups in HMM and medium-molar mass (MMM) fractions were more equal. The -Proteobacteria strongly dominating in LMM DOC fraction refute the idea that LMM DOC is readily utilized by all heterotrophic bacteria.
