dcterms:description
The article focuses on the themes of mobility, migration, and identity in Chris Offutt's first novel The Good Brother, especially Appalachian people moving from their poverty-stricken homes to the West. It also deals with the spiritual journey of the novel's protagonist, whom family and community traditions pushed to avenge against his will the violent death of his brother, making him a fugitive with a new identity, forced out of his native region for the rest of his life. East Kentucky mountain communities are seen as Zygmunt Bauman's %22communities of life and fate,%22 whose members are looking for familiar life patterns and follow traditional rules and habits wherever they go, even in Montana, where the protagonist of the novel tries to start a new life. The article discusses the central paradox of the situation: to stay a member of the community, the protagonist must perform an act that makes him leave the community forever.
