The essay tries to emphasize a fact that has been for too long ignored in American literary history - namely that the modernist movement in the early twentieth century was taking place both in white and black America. And New York was a pioneering site for the mutual influence which was then headed towars the modernist future. It is true that the general atmosphere was still very much marked by the racial relations of the time but on the other hand it was during the Harlem Renaissance that the borders and barriers up to then insurmountable started being transgressed and opened.
