Silymarin, extrakt ze semen Silybum marianum a jeho obsahové látky flavonolignany silybin, silydianin a silychristin a flavonol kvercetin snižovaly oxidační poškození lipidů potkaních srdečních mikrosomů a mitochondrií, které bylo způsobené komplexem železa s doxorubicinem. Kvercetin byl více účinný než silymarin a jeho tři obsahové složky, jejichž účinek byl srovnatelný. Schopnost látek zhášet radikály byla testována pomocí reakce s barevným DPPH a cyklickou volumetrií, aby byly zjištěny jejich antioxidačních vlastnosti. Na rozdíl od kvercetinu, silybin, silydianin and silychristin nevytvářely komplexy s ionty železa ve vodném prostředí. Výsledky naznačují, že silymarin by mohl snižovat poškození potkaních srdečních membrán vyvolané doxorubicinem díky schopnosti interagovat s volnými radikály. Quercetin was found to be more potent than either silymarin or its three constituents, whose cytoprotectivity was comparable. The radical scavenging activity of the compounds was investigated using a DPPH colour reduction assay and cyclic voltametry to assess their antioxidant activities. In contrast to quercetin, silybin, silydianin and silychristin did not chelate iron in aqueous solution. The results suggest that silymarin may prevent doxorubicin-mediated damage to rat heart membrane primarily through a free radical scavenging mechanism.
