Metallic foams and other highly porous materials with cellular structure combine a number of interesting physical and mechanical properties, such as large rigidity at low density, high thermal conductivity, capability to absorb energy, etc. Since the discovery of porous metallic materials numerous methods of production have been developed. The work is focused on an optimization of the foundry method for manufacture of metallic foams. It also deals with properties and applications of metallic foams. Numerous methods of production put the emphasis on foundry production of metal foams with regular cellular structure. Manufacture of the mold is made by using a preform or pattern for investment casting. Penetration of metal into the narrow cavities of the mould will have to be resolved, as well as the total metal fluidity at different designs of gating system. The aim of the work is to evaluate the foundry properties of shaped castings with different shapes of individual inner cells.
